Career Counseling & Wellness for Students Who Are Ready to Discover Their Path
I founded UpNext because I observed a critical gap in how we support teenagers. Career counseling and mental health support are typically separated, yet adolescents cannot effectively explore their futures while managing anxiety, depression, or emotional turmoil. My practice integrates these elements because they are inseparable. I work with students aged 14-18 using developmental psychology and evidence-based counseling to address the whole person—their values, fears, strengths, and emotional needs. This isn't about pushing students toward predetermined paths; it's about creating spaces where they can authentically discover who they are and who they might become.
Most career counselors focus narrowly on college selection or job matching, while mental health providers operate separately from career planning. I weave these together because a student struggling with anxiety cannot effectively explore options, and a student without emotional support cannot sustain motivation through major transitions. My training spans career development theory, mental health assessment, emotional regulation, and adolescent development. This integration means students receive support that addresses both their immediate emotional needs and their long-term direction.
I recognize that sometimes students need immediate help before they can think about their futures. I provide crisis intervention capabilities for students experiencing acute emotional distress, including those with suicidal ideation or severe depression. This isn't separate from career counseling—it's foundational to it. When a student receives immediate support during a critical moment, they can then engage in the deeper work of self-discovery and planning.
I begin every relationship with genuine listening and comprehensive assessment. Rather than rushing toward solutions, I invest time understanding each student's situation, concerns, and aspirations. I use validated career assessments and wellness screening tools to gather objective data, but I always center the student's own narrative. From this foundation, we collaboratively develop a plan that might include individual sessions, group workshops, skill-building exercises, or resource connections. Progress is monitored through regular check-ins, and the approach adjusts as the student's needs evolve.
Beyond individual counseling, I facilitate group workshops addressing common themes like managing academic stress, building resilience, understanding learning differences, exploring career clusters, and developing healthy coping strategies. These workshops create community and normalize the challenges students face, reducing isolation. Peer support alongside professional guidance helps students recognize they are not alone in their struggles and can learn from others navigating similar transitions.
